New Year, Safer Roads: Setting Innovative Safety Goals for 2024

Welcome to the inaugural post of our Compass Safety blog. I’m Alan Eargle, and I'm thrilled to kickstart our blog with a topic that is not only central to our mission but also critical to the safety of drivers worldwide: the importance of investing in technology to reduce impaired driving. Let's set a goal for 2024 of investing in the products designed to curb this practice proactively!

Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of road accidents and fatalities globally. The statistics are sobering (pun intended) and serve as a constant reminder of the tragic consequences that can result from a single moment of poor judgment. For example, did you know NHTSA estimates that in 2021 approximately 13,400 fatalities “involved alcohol”, an increase of 14% and at risk of continuing to rise.

This is where technology steps in as a game-changer. We at Compass Safety believe that the right technological solutions can significantly reduce, and potentially eliminate, the risks associated with impaired driving. Investing in technology is not just about advancing businesses or streamlining operations; it’s about saving lives and fostering a culture of responsibility and safety on the roads. For far too long our primary approach to reduce impaired driving has been a lot of PR, along with stricter enforcement, and stronger penalties for those charged and convicted.  It is time to be proactive in our approach to impaired driving, and instead of treating the symptoms with the same solutions, approach this problem like we would any other, by digging into some of the root causes.

Our approach is not just about enforcement; it's about empowerment. We aim to equip drivers with the tools they need to make responsible decisions. Features like in-car breathalyzers or impairment detection systems can act as a first line of defense, preventing impaired individuals from even starting their vehicles, but we also need tools that are designed to detect signs of impairment and intervene before a driver can pose a risk to themselves and others.

Achieving our goal requires collaboration across sectors. We are partnering with vehicle manufacturers, sensor manufacturers, law enforcement, policy makers, and communities to integrate these technologies seamlessly into everyday life. It’s going to take a collective effort to build a safer driving environment for everyone.

The Road Ahead

Our journey is just beginning. As we continue to innovate and explore new technological frontiers, we will remain committed to our core mission: reducing impaired driving through technology. We invite you to join us in this vital endeavor. Whether you are a driver, a policy maker, a tech enthusiast, or someone who cares about road safety, your support and involvement are crucial.

Together, we can drive towards a future where road safety is not just a goal but a reality.

Thank you for reading. Stay tuned for more updates and insights as we navigate this exciting and meaningful journey.

Drive safe,

Alan Eargle
